OPERA - HOFFMANN [E.T.A.] (author). Mario LABOCCETTA (illustrator). Tales of Hoffmann. London; George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 1932.

4to. Original terracotta cloth pictorially blocked in black, top edges stained rust, tan and green to spine and upper board, in pictorial silhouette dustwrapper; pp. [viii], 9-206 + [i]; with 10 very striking, and mildly erotic, plates, chapter-headings, and other vignettes printed in rich, jewel-like saturated, colours; a very good copy with some fading to spine and edges through dustwrapper, internally very fresh throughout, and crisp, without inscription, in the scarce unclipped and lightly dust-soiled dustwrapper (21s) with upper panel now carefully reattached with tape to the inside, chipping to spine ends, a vertical crease to both panels, and a few closed edge tears.
First edition illustrated thus, with artwork in the style of the Aesthetic Period. Containing five short stories: "The Interdependence of Things"; "The Sandman"; "The Mystery of the Deserted House"; "The Lost Reflection", and "The Walled-In Door". Three of these stories provided the material for the opera The Tales of Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach.
