~b~First edition, presentation copy, inscribed to one Oriana Haynes 'from the author' in ink on front fly-leaf.~i~ Ernest James Oldmeadow (1867-1949) was a journalist and writer, who displays in this book a curiousity in what people eat and drink. There are as well episodes where he improvises meals with almost random foodstuffs found in some of his friends' larders. He gives a very good picture of the English diet at the beginning of the First World War, as the preface is dated October 9, 1914. 'He had a vigorous, pugnacious style, which he kept fresh, he said, by writing standing up and wearing a hat' (Encyclopaedia Britannica).
