NABOKOV, Vladimir. Dar. Roman. New York, Izdatelstvo Imeni Chekhova, 1952.

8vo. Original printed wrappers; pp. 411, [3]; wrappers with light marginal wear and a little spotting; initial blank with repaired shot tear to gutter; Russian ownership inscription to initial blank; a good copy of a fragile publication.
First edition in bookform, and the first complete edition after the serialized version which had come out in a Berlin émigré journal from 1937 to 1938, with chapter four censored, under the pen name Vladimir Sirin. The Gift is Nabokov's last work to be written in Russian under the pen name Vladimir Sirin and appeared in English in 1963. The novel can be descriped as semi-autobiographical meta literature, with a Russian writer in Berlin exile is writing about the struggles and aesthetics of the 19th-century writer Chernyshevsky, the utopian socialist and father of Nihilism.
