Royal 8vo.; publisher's pictorial cloth with wrap-around design to both covers and spine, green spine label lettered in gilt; pp. [xxxvi], [5]-403 + [ii] and an additional unpaginated double-gathering of 16pp. printed on lilac stock, "Told by the Dervish" ; with double-page pictorial map in colours, pictorial title-page, 10 full-page plates in rich matt colours, and line drawings and decorations throughout in profusion; slight rubbing to extremities, a little offseting from endpapers, rear inner hinge strengthened; a good copy of a beautifully produced book, rarely found on this side of the Atlantic.
First edition thus, illustrated by Cyrus Le Roy Baldridge. The author James Justinian Morier (1872-1849) was a British diplomat who lived in Persia for nearly 6 years. He wrote a series of satirical adventures featurijng Hajji Baba, set during the Qajar dynasty of Iran. This picaresque novel, clearly influenced by The Thousand and One Nights, became the most popular Oriental novel in the English language despite being hostile in tone and lampooning Persians as rascals and villains. It long influenced English ideas of Persia.
