MORGAN, Joan. Backwater. London, Chapman and Hall, [1942].

8vo. Original boards with illustrated dust-wrapper; pp. 175, frontispiece after photograph, binding a little marked, wrappers with a few marginal flaws; inscribed on front free endpaper, possibly by the author To John from Joan, dated 1953 on front fly-leaf.
Very rare first edition of this wartime publication on living in Ford House at Wargrave, a village on the river Thames in Berkshire. Joan Morgan (1905-2004) had been an actress during the silent film era, continued acting, screen writing and publishing books. This one reflects the mood of a lady born in Westminster who escaped the Blitz by retreating to this backwater. Maybe the Blitz accounts for the rarity of the book as well.
