Lynde (1830–1906).

The opening ‘Dedicatory’ by Francis A. Griswold (dated April 1849) establishes the tone of the album, describing it as ‘A repository of gems of … affection’, expressing the hope that friendship can ‘trace many lined lines’. There is also an emphasis on morality and religious devotion: ‘write well, with pious thought, with a holy heart’, a concern that is echoed throughout the volume. The album contains five chromolithographic botanical plates which are incorporated into the contributions. Opposite the depiction of a rose, Lucy A. Woodward addresses her ‘dear friend’, writing, ‘A fair bouquet of flowers I’d cull for thee; | Blue bells, white lilies, roses red’ and ‘Each flower must then a token be, | Reminding my lov’d friend of me’. In another contribution, the page before an illustration of a Campanula, another friend writes of ‘flowers of hope joy and Peace’.

There are also contributions from outside Melrose’s geographical vicinity, including contributions from Griggsville, IL (L. Tuller, 26 June 1857), Schenectady, NY (E. Sprague, undated), St Louis, MO (E.A. Emerson, 29 September 1856), Chicago (Hulting, 28 December 1869), and Berlin (Mary E. Halleur, February 1856). Several of these appear to be from friends and acquaintances leaving Massachusetts to live elsewhere. The contribution from St Louis is dedicated ‘to the friend I now bid a farewell’. Mary Halleur’s Berlin contribution was particularly poignant: born Mary Elizabeth Honeybun in 1831, she married Hermann Halleur, the German author of The Art of Photography (1854); her poem repeats the line ‘When shall we two meet again’ and features a tone of despair at being separated (‘Tho’ in distant lands we sigh, parch’d beneath a hostile sky’). The two would evidently not meet again, as Mary Halleur died later that year. There is also an inscription from Benjamin Braman (New York, 1869) – perhaps the 1854 Brown graduate and professor of Latin at the University of Michigan from 1855 to 1856 – as well as contributions from Lynde’s sister and cousin.

Friendship albums like this one served as a space for shared quotation and strengthening relationships. They were particularly popular among schoolgirls and young women and offered an opportunity to practise and display penmanship.

Provenance: Sarah Elizabeth Lynde (1830–1906) born in Malden to Amos Porter Lynde and Sarah Ann (Sprague) Lynde.

SKU: 2125112
