Original blue ribbed cloth, illustrated in red and white, lettered in gilt; outer and lower edges untrimmed; pictorial endpapers; pp. [iv], 9-231 (plates included in the pagination); highly illustrated throughout, with a pictorial title-page printed in grey-blue and black, plates in colour, and illustrations in blue-grey; light sunning to spine, with some rubbing to extremities and hinges; spine ends with wear, and stiffened, slight rubbing to corners of boards, with a few light unobtrusive marks to boards; ink inscription to front fly-leaf; lower hinge strengthened; light even toning to paper-stock; otherwise a very good copy.
First published in 1903, this being an early reprint of September 1904 for the British market. Illustrated by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull, book design by Charles Edward Hooper. Based on London's experince of life and hardship on the Yukon during the Klondyke gold rush, the moving dog story discusses civilisation, power struggles, and the brutality of mankind. This book, first serialized and then published in this book form in the US made Jack London famous overnight.
