4to., stapled wraps illustrated with a vibrant design in oranges and pinks; verso of front cover showing a black and white photograph of a gate; pp. [iv], 16 [xviii, photographs]; 17-27, [iii]; containing 33 black and white photographs taken in the ashram; covers a little stained, staples rusted with the cover showing one small hole where detached from the lower; still a lovely example, internally fresh.
One of just 500-1,000 copies printed, at the time, only via mail-order through the ashram. One of Leary’s rarest titles.
A guidebook based on the practices of the League for Spiritual Discovery, containing numerous photographs showing activities at the Millbrook commune, including a wedding ceremony at which Leary officiated.
Leary inhabed the estate for almost five years, and during this time he welcomed guests such as Allen Ginsberg, Charles Mingus, and R. D. Laing. The activities Leary oversaw are the subject of much speculation. Some describe these years as a drug-fueled frenzy, including The New York Times’ Luc Sante, who described “a period filled with endless parties, epiphanies and breakdowns, emotional dramas of all sizes, and numerous raids and arrests.” Others maintain that the the estate’s activities were purely research-based. Either way, frequent FBI raids would eventually drive Leary and Co. off the estate.
