Sergio Larrain is considered to be one of Chile's most important photographers. He is predominently known for his street photography, as well as his unusual angles, shadows, and chosen subjects (mostly poor children). In 1958 he was comissioned by the British Council to photograph England, leading to these smoggy, down-at-heel images of London which captured a mood which was still, in many ways, post-war. The pictures brought him to the attention of Henri Cartier-Bresson, who quickly signed him to Magnum, a photo agency founded in 1947, though he retired to a remote refuge in the Chilean mountains a short while after, where he remained for the majority of his life until his death in 2012.
