8vo. Original bright red cloth elaborately and pictorially gilt to spine and upper board, all edges gilt, pictorial red endpapers (different at front and rear), in the original pictorial dustwrapper printed in orange; pp. [v], vi-xii +372; with coloured frontispiece guarded by tissue and 7 other fine coloured plates alongside engravings throughout, in profusion; externally an exceptionally bright, fine, copy with only a few tiny slightly darker spots to lower board, internally very crisp and clean, and uninscribed, with only one small brown mark (7mm) to lower margin on one leaf, slightly offset to adjacent one; protected by a very good, and largely complete, example of the rare dustwrapper with some overall toning and fading to spine, two small circular areas of loss (both 5mm) and a weak vertical crease to the same, slim losses to head and foot with minor associated chipping, and a few small, neat, and old archival tape repairs to the reverse; rare in the dustwrapper.
First edition, presented in the correct dustwrapper. A collection of old romances "when there were castles and knights, and tournaments, and the chief business of gentlemen was to ride about in full armour, fighting".
