LANDOR, A. Henry Savage (author and illustrator). Tibet & Nepal. London, Adam and Charles Black, [1905].

Large 8vo.; publisher's rich blue cloth strikingly and decoratively blocked in gilt and black to spine and upper cover, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; pp. x, 233 + [i]; with a total of 75 plates printed in full colour and half-tones, all with captioned tissue-guards, with a pull-out sketch map to the rear; externally uncommonly bright and unrubbed with only a few yellowish spots to the spine and speckling to the fore, and lower, edges of the book block, internally generally clean and very crisp with occasional pale foxing and previous owner's armorial bookplate to front pastedown endpaper.
First edition. 'Tibet and Nepal, … is possibly the most unusual and entertaining book in the whole of the A & C Black oeuvre … Savage Landor despised the Alpine Club traditions of mountaineering, and preferred to wear city clothes and ordinary shoes or light boots, even in the Himalayas … both text and illustrations stretch the reader's credulity beyond its limits. There may be collectors who do not bother to read the A & C Black volumes parked on their shelves: an exception should be made in this instance … No record exists of who designed the unusual cover’ (Inman).
