KEBLE, John. The Life of the Right Reverend Father in God Thomas Wilson, D.D., Lord Bishop of Sodor and Man. Oxford: John Henry Parker. 1863.
8vo. 2 vols. Full red morocco, gilt borders and lozengess to sides, spines with gilt raised bands, gilt lettering and panels enclosing lozenges, all edges gilt; handsome binding, very good. Provenance: inscribed by one of Wilson's descendants to his brother, with ephemeral items tipped in including a manuscript page of notes of Bishop Wilson's hand.
First edition. Wilson was largely responsible for the preservation and the Manx language and his Manx catechism of 1707 was the first book printed in the language. He was also responsible for establishing libraries on the island, acting as physician and apothecary, and advancing agriculture through his activities as a planter. He was, in all, a remarkable man and gained a sympathetic biographer in Keble, whose last major work this was.
