First trade ediiotn of a successful 19th century work, based on letters written during the extension of a grand tour to the Levant between 1816 and 1820. Irby and Mangles had explored Syria together with William John Bankes and Thomas Legh, witnessed the excavations at Abu Simbel by Belzoni, and were among the first Europeans to visit Petra.
