HYNEK, Karel; translated by Edith Pargeter (aka Ellis Peters); illustrated by Jan Zrzavy Macha. May. Prague. Artia Graphic Design. 1965.
Folio, original patterned cloth with matching slipcase. Slipcase a little rubbed and worn, otherwise a very good copy.
First edition of this translation. A handsomely printed volume designed by Lucie Weisbergerova. "It is understandable that these verses have inspired numerous illustrators. The most recent is Jan Zrzavy, national artist, whose dreamy and ethereal picture, often reminiscent of the best in primitive art, seem almost predestined to stand side by side with the poetry of Karel Hynek Macha. This edition is accompanied by Zrzavy's illustrations, and appears in English in the sensitive and faithful translation of Edith Pargeter."
Edith Pargeter, also known by her nom de plume Ellis Peters, was an English author of works in many categories, especially history and historical fiction, and was also honoured for her translations of Czech classics; she is probably best known for her murder mysteries, both historical and modern. She is well known for her medieval-detective series The Cadfael Chronicles.
