The novel follows the writer Durtal, who, disenchanted with modern life, immerses himself in the worlds of medieval mysticism, Satanism, and the occult. Assisted by his lover, Madame Chantelouve, he investigates contemporary black masses while researching the notorious fifteenth-century nobleman and serial killer Gilles de Rais (\u003ci\u003ec.\u003c\/i\u003e 1405–1440).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first English translation, by Keene Wallis, appeared in New York in 1924 from Albert \u0026amp; Charles Boni and was privately reprinted in Paris in 1928. This Black Archer Press edition, issued in Chicago in 1930 under the direction of bookseller and editor William Targ (1907–1999), was produced by arrangement with Boni using Wallis’s copyrighted translation, but with the text entirely reset. Featuring a frontispiece by John Groth, a title-page by G.
