HUGHES, Ted Cave Birds New York, The Viking Press, 1978.
Landscape 4to. Original black cloth, lettered gilt to spine, with illustrated dustwrapper; pp. 64; illustrated with 28 black-and-white plates by Leonard Baskin; a very good copy with some faint spotting to cloth.
First US edition, published alongside the UK edition. A collection of poems based on Baskin's illustrations, which grew through various iterations from an initial ten to a full thirty on the theme of life and death. This definitive edition by Faber contains 29 poems, and 28 of Baskin's illustrations. As many of the poems were derived from the illustrations, some are nigh incomprehensible without reference to the images that inspired them, making the book a complete work of art where poet and artist elevate each other in a truly inextricable way.
