First edition. In 1878 Thomas Holdich began a long connection with the North-West frontier as a survey officer with the southern Afghanistan field force. He served with distinction in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–80), the Mahsud Waziri expedition of 1881, the Zhob field force of 1890, and the Afridi Tirah expedition of 1897–8, being several times mentioned in dispatches. The present work offers an overview of his experience and findings from twenty years of service, and provides an important record of events in the region. The book deals as well with the Russian-Afghan boundary.
