HEMINGWAY, Ernest. The Old Man and the Sea. London: The Reprint Society by arrangement with Messrs. Jonathan Cape Ltd., 1953.
8vo., original turquoise cloth with fish design in silver to upper cover; spine with lettering in silver and red painted label; original unclipped pictorial jacket (5/-); with numerous black and white illustrations, end papers, and jacket by C. F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard; pp. [vi], 7-117, [iii]; near-fine, with small crease to lower inner gutter and light pushing and bumping to extremities; jacket with some chips and nicks to corners and edges; particularly so to head and foot of spine; with one very small internal tape repair and a couple of faint cup marks to upper panel; still very bright and fresh.
First edition thus. From the Library of writer Richard Adams, with a copy of his bookplate to the front free endpaper. This edition published one year after the first, benefitting from a series of highly evocative illustrations. They were subsequently used by both Scribners in the US and Jonathan Cape in the UK for their illustrated editions.
Both artists were prolific, and worked primarily in the area of birds and animal painting and drawing. They both contributed to The Children's Wonder Book in Colour and Tunnicliffe produced 'How to draw farm animals' in the same series that Sheppard wrote 'How to draw birds', 'More birds to draw' and 'Drawing at the zoo'.
A lovely association copy.
