HEJAZ RAILWAY TRACK PIECE. Collected by the traveller, Arabist, soldier, and diplomat Hugh Leach 'when posted in Saudi Arabia in the mid 1960's. It came from near Weibaan' (Hugh Leach's signed manuscript note, dated September, 25, 2000. provided). Most likely Germany or Belgium, c. 1906-1917.

9.5 cm piece cut from the entire rail, pre-drilled with bolthole for joining two lenghths of rail. Hugh Leach, as many, was fascinated with T. E. Lawrence and the Arab Revolt, which included blowing up the strategically important Hejaz Railway time and time again. Leach had gathered first-hand experience of working with Arab tribes to examine T.E. Lawrence’s strategy, and later published an article about it in History Today. He had travelled with Freya Stark and Wilfred Thesiger and in the 1960s performed with a travelling crircus in Egypt.
Further provenance: Hugh Leach put this piece into a charity auction in aid of St George's Church Hinton St George 24 years ago (auction list provided).
