HARTING, James Edmund. A Handbook of British Birds showing the distribution of the resident and migratory species in the British Islands with an index to the records of the rarer visitants. John C. Nimmo. 1901.
8vo. Original brown cloth, gilt vignette of bird's head to upper, gilt lettering spine; pp. xxvii + 520, 35 coloured plates from drawings by Hermann Schlegel; spine a little dulled, previous owner's pencilled signature to fly-leaf, very good.
New and revised edition. This book was written to answer the demand for a one volume British bird book that was illustrated in colour and within the means of customers who could not afford the lavish multi-volume works of authors such as Lilford. This was made possible by restricting the illustrations of the birds to their heads only, allowing more birds to be shown per plate. The result is an extremely accessible and useful guidebook that concentrates on the most important characteristics of each bird, allowing for easy recognition.
