HARRIS, Walter B. A Journey through the Yemen, and some General Remarks upon that Country. London, Darf Publishers Ltd, 1985.
8vo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, with yellow illustrated dust jacket; pp. xii, 385, 1 folding map, illustrated throughout in black and white; near fine.
Facsimile of the 1893 edition. The travel memoirs of Walter Burton Harris, traveller, journalist and socialite. Correspondent for the Times, Harris' linguistic skill and physical appearance allowed him to easily pass for a native in many places, giving himself unparalleled access to aspects of foreign culture previously unexplored. Though more famous for his exploits in Morocco, where he played a significant (though not always helpful) role in European intrigues at the start of the 20th century, his travels in the Yemen mark the true start of his journalistic career.
