HAMILTON FINLAY, Ian. Dancers Inherit The Party. With Zeljko Kujundzic, California: Migrant Press. 1960.

215  × 180 mm. Publisher’s stapled salmon-coloured wrappers with woodcut design by Kujundzic; pp.36.

The first edition of one of Finlayʼs formative poetry collections. Mimeograph-printed with two woodcuts by Zeljko Kujundzic (one printed to the cover, the other tipped-in as frontispiece). A second edition was printed in summer 1962, with a green cover and a different woodcut as frontispiece. This copy also has a Bibliographic History of Migrant Press (c.1965, Birmingham, England) inserted loose. ‘Migrant Press began in Worcester (under the name of Migrant Books) in 1957 when Gael Turnbull attempted to introduce into England the work of certain American writers that had interested him, through Origin, Black Mountain Review and the Jargon books of Jonathan Williams.’(From the Bibliographic History of Migrant Press). ‘Finlayʼs rhyming poems, collected in 1960 in The Dancers Inherit the Party, have similarly broad allegiances. When the American poet Lorine Niedecker read them, she was convinced that Finlay had read her own writings and had been influenced by them. But this was certainly not the case. Perhaps the paradox that the original form of poetic diction can be both strictly local, and yet also international in its ramifications, is only an apparent one.’ (Yves Abrioux).
