Maria Hack (1777-1844) wrote a number of educational books for the Darton publishing company. Her eldest daughter Elizabeth oversaw her illustrations while another daughter, Margaret, married into the Darton dynasty. This book is a very engaging introduction to contemporary geology and devotes space to the discoveries by Mary Anning of the icthyosaur and plesiosaur in Lyme Regis, which were continuing sensations. As with most of Hack's books, the text is in the form of a dialogue between little Harry Beaufoy and his inordinately well-educated parents.
