This print is after the painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott (1760-1802). It is one of the earliest pictures depicting the game of golf.
The golfer shown is William Innes, who was Captain of the Society of Golfers at Blackheath, England in 1778. The caddie is a Greenwich Hospital Naval pensioner.
The golf course at Blackheath was 5 to 7 holes and its members comprised of wealthy merchants.
