GRAHAM, Stephen A Tramps's Sketches. London, Nelson, [c. 1922].
8vo. Original cloth with illustrated dust-wrappers (not price-clipped) pp. 374, [2, colophon], [6, publisher's advertisements], apart from light marginal flaw and rubbing to wrappers, a very good copy.
First published in 1912, this is the eternal tramp's precursor to With the Russian Pilgrims to Jerusalem (1913). Stephen Graham here describes his foot journeys with Russian pilgrims in the Caucasus, along the shores of the Black Sea and in the Holy Land. 'Most of it was written in the open air, sitting on logs in the pine forests or on bridges over mountain streams, by the side of my morning fire or on the sea sand after the morning dip' (Preface).
