First published in 1766, The Vicar of Wakefield is a charming and satirical story following the life and adventures of Dr. Charles Primrose, a virtuous and naïve clergyman, and his family. Set in the fictional village of Wakefield, the story is narrated by Dr. Primrose's son, who details how the family's idyllic life is disrupted when they fall victim to a series of misfortunes, including financial ruin and deceit. Celebrated for its engaging storytelling and successful interweaving of elements of humour, satire, and sentiment, Goldsmith's narrative is a fascinating commentary on the social and moral values of eighteenth century England.
