GARRATT, Geoffrey T. The Shadow of the Swastika … author of Mussolini's Empire. London, Hamish Hamilton, .
8vo. Original burgundy cloth with illustrated dust-wrappers, not price-clipped; pp. 243, , 244a-244d, 245-247; apart from light offsetting from endpapers, near-fine.
First edition, first impression with four pages altered last-minute, because of the September crisis, 'this unhappy series of events' (p. 244a). The book is dedicated to the Englishmen of the International Brigade and following an analysis of Mussolinis' Italy and fascism it 'attemps to measure and describe the forces working in England towards a totalitarian state' and Garratt 'considers the type of person to whom this ideal might appeal' (blurb inside front flap). The author did not only think of P.G. Wodehouse's Black Shorts organized by Roderick Spode, 7th Earl of Sidcup, known as Spode.
