FROUDE, James Anthony. History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Death of Elizabeth. Parker, Son, and Bourn/Longman. 1862-70.
8vo. 12 vols.; sometime bound in half red morocco ruled in gilt, spine with raised gilt bands, gilt panels and lettering; a most attractive set.
Third edition revised. Froude's great History is the foundation stone on which all subsequent Tudor studies rest. This set is from the library of the politician and diplomatist Duff Cooper, first Viscount Norwich (1890-1954), Ambassador to Paris from 1944 to 1947, with his bookplate designed by Rex Whistler to the front pastedown of all twelve volumes. He was an historian himself, being the author of a well-received biography of Talleyrand.
