FOSTER, R. F. Foster's Whist Tactics New York & London, Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1895.
8vo. Original green cloth, decorated with a solitaire motif in white and red, titled similarly in gilt, all edges gilt; pp. viii, 224; spine slightly faded but not significantly, retains strong colours elsewhere, internally clean.
A manual on tactics for the card came 'Whist', popular at the time this book was produced. Foster is infamous for his prolific production of books on card and dice games, the best known of which is the Complete Hoyle . Though many of his books teach the rudiments of the game to new players, this book on Whist tactics is a more complex endeavour aimed at higher levels of play. Specifically for the production of this book, a game was played between "16 of the best players in the American White League" by correspondence, with each move taking a week or more to complete.
