[FERLINGHETTI, Lawrence, Ed.] City Lights Journal: A Complete Run in Four Volumes San Francisco: City Lights Books, 1963-1978.

8vo., 4 vols; original card wraps with black and white photographic designs showing a number of figures including Allen Ginsberg in the Himalayas, Ezra Pound in Venice, Charlie Chaplain and vairous other poets at the City Lights bookstore; pp. [iv], 5-112; [vi], 7-280; [vi], 7-229, [vi]; [vii], 8-253, [iii]; very good copies all, slight shelf-wear, creasing along spines, and overall shelf-wear; some of the pages evenly toned; with some compression to spine tips; lovely examples, in all.
First editions, first printings of this landmark series of Journals, with a huge number of various contributors including Guillaume Apollinaire, Charles Bukowski, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and Pablo Neruda, among others. Published by Ferlinghetti's iconic City Lights Books imprint, the final volume edited by Mendes Monsanto.
Although originally modelled on such older and distinguished European literary journals as Botteghe Oscure and the yearly American anthologies from New Directions, the Journal did not stay on schedule. It numbered only four issues, the last of which was not published until fifteen years after the first. It stands, however, as a testament to a truly international selection of avant-garde literature, including works in translation by García Lorca, Rimbaud, Picasso, Prévert, Neruda, and others, as well as original work by almost all the Beat, Black Mountain, and San Francisco Renaissance writers.
