ELLISON, Grace. An Englishwoman in Angora. London, Hutchinson, [1923].

8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, crescent and star in gilt on front cover; pp. 344, plates after photographs, illustrations after drawings in the text, extremities a little rubbed, otherwise very good.
First edition of an important first-hand report on the early years of the Turkish Republic and life in the new capital. The author was a journalist and Turkey expert who had been living in the country - off and on - from 1905 onwards. She knew all the movers and shakers of the new Turkey, Turkish feminists and Atatürk himself, whose entries in the useful index take up a whole page, densely typeset in two columns. Several illustrations are portraits of the founder of modern Turkey.
