EDINBURGH. Lays of the Colleges being a Collection of Songs and Verses by Members of the Aesculapian, Medico-Chirurgical and Other Professional Clubs in Edinburgh. Edinburgh: MacLachlan & Stewart, 64 South Bridge, 1886.
8vo., original brown cloth, upper board lettered and bordered in gilt and blocked with the devices of the professional clubs in gilt, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, head and foot decorated in gilt, all edges gilt; spine slightly faded, extremities slightly rubbed and bumped, nonetheless a very good copy; provenance: AW Sinclair (gift inscription on front free endpaper 'To AW Sinclair with all good wishes for 1911 from LG').
A collection of verses which were sung or performed at gatherings of the major Edinburgh professional societies put together because of requests from non-members who had heard them. A.W. Sinclair was a photographer and member of The Old Edinburgh Club, a society for preservation of information about Edinburgh in the pre-railway days formed by a fellow photographer WJ Hay. The society still exists today and celebrated its centenary in 2008.
