Charles Henry Eden (1839-1900) spent the earlier part of his life in Australia as a civil servant and entrepreneur, before moving back to England to devote himself to writing, both fiction and non-fiction, mainly on Colonial matters. In this book he gives a sum of what the British could or wanted to know about China, in all her aspects. The section on Corea takes up pages 281 to 332 and is among the earlier texts in English on the country.
