DULAC, Edmund (illustrator). Sir Arthur QUILLER-COUCH (editor). The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales. London, Hodder & Stoughton.
4to. Original rust brown cloth elaborately gilt, with a rococo design stamped in gilt to both upper and lower covers, top edges olivine; pp. [xviii] + 128 + [iii]; with 30 beautiful mounted coloured plates set within decorative captioned borders and guarded by blank tissues; externally a fine and handsome copy, internally very fresh, clean, and crisp throughout with a small and invisible repair to upper inner hinge and one very short, and barely perceptible, crease (2cm) to inner corner of a single plate, otherwise fine.
First edition, presented in the first issue binding with gilding to both of the publisher's boards, complete with the loosely-inserted printed flyer for the exhibition of original watercolours for the book, held at the Leicester Galleries in November 1910.
These are some of the most exquisite of all fairy tale illustrations, printed as they are in delightfully sharp but subtle colours which seem almost iridiscent in some images. The four fairy tales included are: 'Sleeping Beauty'; 'Bluebeard'; 'Cinderella' and 'Beauty and the Beast'.
