Contemporary Irish black roan, boards blind-stamped to a cornucopia design against a background of solid and cross-hatched diamonds, borders roll-tooled in gilt, gilt lyre and floral ornaments to spine, edges gilt; ff. [68]; on cream paper interspersed with pastel paper, pencil drawings to 16 ff.; hinges cracked but still holding, edges and joints a little worn; nonetheless very well preserved; contemporary ownership inscription ‘E[lizabeth] M[aria] D’Olier from Muff’, several drawings initialled ‘HCS.’ (see below).

An Irish Victorian sketchbook comprising Irish landscapes, architectural ruins, and portraits of women, formerly owned by Elizabeth Maria D’Olier (later Sitwell, d. 1917) of Dublin.

The drawings include what appear to be a view of a bay (perhaps Killiney Bay, County Dublin), a parish church, and ruins. There may also be a connection to the town of Muff, County Donegal, on the border with Northern Ireland, given D’Olier’s ownership inscription ‘from Muff’ to the front free endpaper; the village sits at the mouth of the River Foyle. Some are more traditional in style, such as two portraits of a woman at a desk, and one full-figure depiction. There are also quick comic sketches, one depicting a horse bolting, and another an imaginative seascape featuring a winking, rising sun with a ghost floating overhead.

Provenance: Elizabeth Maria D’Olier was the daughter of Nicholas Ogle D’Olier, the descendant of eighteenth-century French Protestant exiles in Dublin. She married Major Francis Henry Massey Sitwell of Barmoor Castle, Northumberland on 4 August 1859; their two sons were both born in India. Francis was the son of County Dublin-born Sarah Honoria Cooper (c. 1800–1892), who may be the artist signing the drawings ‘HCS’. The marked variation in style throughout the sketchbook suggests that the drawings may be the work of at least two artists.

SKU: 2117161

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0045/2178/7426/files/2117161_bee5bef8-6b83-40d6-b5d5-ed17ff4e3631.jpg?v=1793380848
https://sotherans.co.uk/products/dolier-elizabeth-maria-sketchbook-with-pencil-drawings-of-irish-landscapes-and-scenery
