Second edition. Zimmer describes it as: "An account of the habits of British game birds, with notes on distribution, relationships and classification, and with synonymy and a paragraph of diagnostic characters of each species." Mullens & Swann describe the author complimentarily: "Mr Dixon wields a facile pen," and go on to describe him as "being the son of a landscape painter and engraver. He was for some years employed in travelling in search of ornithological information and specimens by the late Henry Seebohm when preparing his History of British Birds."
