DARWIN, ERASMUS. The Temple of Nature; Or, The Origin of Society: A Poem, With Philosophical Notes. London, The Scolar Press, 1973.
4to. Original brown cloth in green printed dust jacket; pp. [xiv], 124; very good.
Scolar Press Facsimile edition of this scarce poetical work by Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin. The extended poem, though not posed as a scientific work, contained the roots of many ideas that would make their way into Charles' Theory of Evolution, most specifically 'survival of the fittest'. The poem as a whole traces the progression of life from micro-organisms to civilised society.
