[DALI]; Captain J. Peter Moore [Trans.]. Les Dîners de Gala. New York: Felicie, Inc. Publishers, 1973.
Small Folio (22.5 x 31cm); publisher's cloth printed with an image by Dali; in the stunning embossed and gold printed dust jacket; decorative endpapers; pp. [iii], 8-322, [ii] (but complete); printed throughout in full colour, with recipes, photographs, and full and double-page illustrations by the artist; a wonderful copy, with rubbing, being the only defect, to the edges of the boards; the dust jacket similarly rubbed in places, with some light scratches to the lower panel and some marginal creasing to the upper edge; near-fine in very good to near-fine jacket.
First edition. A wonderful collection of recipes, with 12 "Hors-Texte" specially designed by the artist, 55 recipes illustrated in colour, 21 of which were prepared by 'the leaders of French gastronomy'. The recipes in this cook book are never before published, and "have been elaborated with great precision by a 'chef' wishing to remain in the most secret anonymity". Among them include such exotic dishes entitled 'Conger of the Rising Sun', 'Thousand Year Old Eggs', and 'Tripe of Yesteryear', as well as a section specifically for aphrodisiacs.
Millennials will be happy to see avocado toast included in the Hors-d'oeuvre section, though with the slightly unusual addition of brains.
