Original grey buckram, lettered and decorated in red, with the rarely seen illustratde dust-wrappersp pp. xxv, 417, x, , folding map at the beginning (repaired tear to vertical fold) illustrations on colour plates and in the text, photogravure plates; apart from few minor marginal flaws to the wrapper, repair to map and name on front fly-leaf, a very good copy of a Bali classic.
Fourth printing (first, 1937) of the book that stirred the Bali craze in the US in the late 1930s. Covarrubias was a New York artist from Mexico who also worked as an anthropoligist. The book design and illustrations (apart from the photo plates) are by him.
