Lithographic folding map in three colours and a little hand-colouring, measuring 55 by 75 cm, folding back into the original printed wrappers, minor old professional restorations to folds; a good copy of a very rare and attractive map.
This birds-eye map incorporates pictorial elements, such as landmark buildings and an Arab watching from the western shore of the Persian Gulf. Alfred Concanen (1835-1886), of Irish descent, or born in Ireland, was one of the leading Victorian sheet music artists and lithographers, before branching out to 'seat of war' bird's eye views. This particular pictorial map was triggered by the Great Game and the Afghan War of 1878.
