A CHRISTIE CLASSIC

CHRISTIE, Agatha (author). Sparkling Cyanide. London: The Crime Club by Collins, 1945.

8vo., publisher's orange/red cloth, lettered in black to spine, in the celebrated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [iv], 5-160; externally a sharp, clean, copy bar a touch of uniform fading to spine, internally fine and uninscribed, protected by a striking, and remarkably fresh, example of the scarce, price-clipped dustwrapper with only a couple of small nicks and mild abrasion to spine tail and minor rubbing to head and edges, with an unremarkable and short horizontal crease to top edge of upper panel.
First U.K. edition; first printing, published in the U.S. as Remembered Death in February of the same year, issued here in a later issue dustwrapper, without the press reviews to the lower panel and with the Crime Club novel by Lorac entitled The Fire in the Thatch (which was published the following year) listed to lower flap. The dustwrapper has clearly always been on this copy, both book and dustwrapper are in excellent, clean and crisp condition. Agatha Christie's subsequent work, The Hollow (The Cirme Club by Collins 1946) is not mentioned the publisher's list in the book or on the jacket. The publisher apparently reprinted the jacket which was paired here with the first impression of the book. The U.K. edition is preferred to the U.S. edition by collectors and boasts an iconic jacket design. Rosemary Barton died at one of London's most prestigious restaurants a year before the novel opens. Was it death or suicide? Of the same six people who gather for a meal on the anniversary, each has a separate and secret reason to explain their nervous anticipation.
