CHAPMAN, Abel & Walter J. BUCK Unexplored Spain; With 209 Illustrations by Joseph Crawhall, E. Caldwell, and Abel Chapman, and Others. Edward Arnold, 1910.
Royal 8vo. Rebound in half red morocco, gilt spine in six compartments with raised bands, gilt lettering to second and fourth compartments, t.e.g.; xvi + pp. 411 (+ 22pp. booklist), with a photographic frontispiece of "H.M. King Alfonso XIII spearing a boar", with tissue-guard, 27 full-page collotype and photographic plates, and 182 other collotype and wood-engraved illustrations throughout; very good.
First edition. The authors recommend their new technique of "shooting" the animals with a camera, rather than with a gun, but even better, drawing them in situ, and leaving them be, rather than placing them in a zoo, for "not a man who has watched wild beasts and wild birds in their native haunts, glorified and ennobled by self-conscious aptitude to prevail, but instantly recognises the different demeanour of the same creatures in captivity, albeit carefully tended in the best zoological gardens of the world."
