BULLEN, Frank T. The Cruise of the "Cachalot" round the World after Sperm Whales. London, Smith, Elder & Co., 1907.
8vo. Beautiful contemporary marbled calf prize binding pmade for the Worshipful Company of Brewers, large gilt-stamped seal on front cover, spine with raised bands and morocco lettering-piece, inner dentelles gilt, their engraved book-plate inside front cover, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; pp. [ii]-xx, 375, wood-engraved plates (including frontispiece with tissue guard), 1 folding map; only very light rubbing to binding, apart from scattered light spotting, a good and attractively bound copy.
Admired by Kipling, this is a later edition of a whaling classic, a hunt along the Southern hemisphere, sometimes close to the cold Antarctic climes. Kipling's comment is printed before the preface. 'It is immense - there is no other word. I've never read anything that equals it in its deep sea wonder and mystery'.
