The Massacre of Glencoe is an essay reflecting on a chapter of horrendous betrayal in Socttish history. In 1692 the small Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were massacred under orders from the English Government. The troops were being hosted by the Macdonald clan but violently murdered men, women and children as they slept in an example of ethnic cleansing deeply recorded in Highland psyche. As Buchan puts it in is introductory note, "The only liberty I have taken is now and then to state boldy what should strictly be qualified by a 'probably'".
