A Prince of the Captivity was one of John Buchan's final novels. In a similar vein as his other works, the novel is one of adventure, and revolves around an officer, Adam Melfort, who is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit and afterwards embarks on a series of increasingly daring missions in the service of his country, notably behind enemy lines in WWI, and, inspired by German scientist Alfred Wegener's fatal 1930 expedition, a voyage to the arctic.
