BROWN, John Croumbie. Forests and Forestry in Poland, Lithuania, the Ukraine, and the Baltic Provinces of Russia, with Notices of the Export of Timber from Memel, Dantzig, and Riga. Edinburgh, Oliver and Boyd, 1885.
8vo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover ornamente in blind; pp. viii, 276, 16 [list of works on forestry by Brown], 4; minimal rubbing to binding, very light browning at beginning and end, a very good copy of a scarce work.
First edition. Brown was the British authority on forestry, after having worked as a botanist and hydrographer in South Africa. He then devoted his reading, travelling, contacts and experience to Eastern Europe. The chapter The Jewish Population within the section titled Forestry in Lithuania is profusely anti-Semitic, and not based on deep understanding of the social and political history of the Jews of Eastern Europe, one has to admit.
