BRONTE, Charlotte; [Edmund DULAC, Illustrator]. The Professor. London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1922.
8vo., green cloth boards ruled in black to upper cover with device to centre, and lettering with floral border in black to spine; brown paper dust wrapper printed in like design; pp. xi, [i], 244; with six coloured illustrations by Edmund Dulac; upper edge and prelims a little foxed, otherwise near-fine in fine jacket which is one of the freshest we have seen.
First edition illustrated thus. The Professor was Charlotte Bronte's first book, but was overshadowed by the later sucesses of Villette, Jane Eyre and Shirley and only published posthumously in 1857. The story is based upon Charlotte Brontë's experiences in Brussels, where she studied as a language student in 1842.
