BRAZILIAN BUTTERFLY WING TRAY. Pictorial tray (image size 28 x 45 cm) combining gold and black painting with blue-ish iridescent morpho butterfly wings under glass. Rio de Janeiro, Atelier Elizabeth, c. 1940s.
Morpho butterfly wings inlaid under glass with mahogany and other tropical wood marquetry. The use of the iridescent morpho butterfly wings for ornamentation goes back to Native Brazilian traditions and flourished in the middle of the 20th century. This tray combines under glass painting with wings. Among the number of such trays we handled over the last five years, this is definitely the most stylish and tastefully restrained one.
