BRAZILIAN BUTTERFLY WING TRAY. Pictorial tray (image size 24 x 33 cm) combining colourful painting with morpho butterfly wings under glass. Brazil, c. 1940s.
Morpho butterfly wings inlaid under glass with mahogany and other tropical wood marquetry. The use of the irridescent morpho butterly wings for ornamentation goes back to Native Brazilian traditions and flourished in the middle of the 20th century. This tray combines under glass painting with wings. Most trays are ornamental and not pictorial, as this fine example, which depicts a large parrot in the centre, surrounded by famous views, including the recentlly (1936) erected gigantic statue of Jesus above Rio de Janeiro. Among the number of such trays we handled over the last five years, this is definitely the most colourful one.
