[BIGNOLD, Mary.] SPEED, Lancelot [illustrator]. A Sojourn in the Highlands. Achanalt, Ross-shire: privately printed. 1885.
4to. Original burgundy cloth, gilt vignette of stag's antlers and lettering to front; pp. 104 + [16}, tipped-in albumen photograph frontispiece portrait of Bignold. Illustrated throughout by Lancelot Speed; a little spotting to frontis, very good. Provenance: front pastedown inscribed by Lancelot Speed to Sybil Carlisle (1871-1951), actress, noted beauty, first love of John Galsworthy and habituée of the literary scene.
First edition. Benefitting from some marvellous and energetic illustrations by Speed, who was at the beginning of his career, this energetic account of sport, scenery and shenanigans in Scotland is the work of the daughter of Sir Arthur Bignold, owner of the Lochrosque and Strathbran estates in Ross-shire, where the action takes place. She inherited the estate when he died in 1915. This very rare work was only reprinted in 1996, as a limited edition.
COPAC records only 2 copies.
